how a sewer rat took over a spooktacular 2004
BowWowWeen
Little angels, scary devils, chick magnets and
pimped out doggies with tails a-wagging and and smiles a-grinning
displayed their talents and spooky good looks during the heated
competition for top honors of Best in Showat the The 3rd Annual BowWowWeen. The
event was held at the Barrington Dog Park in Brentwood, CA on Sunday,
October 31st with over 1,500 park visitors adopting rescue dogs,
shopping from vendors and enjoying amazing dog costumes on the majority
of the day’s four-legged visitors. Presented by Much Love Animal
Rescue, Friends of Barrington Dog Park, The Pet Staff Pet Sitting, and Los Angeles Parks Department, the Doggie Costume Contest
was the highlight of the sunny Los Angeles afternoon when over 130
competitors lined up to compete for the top prize of one years supply
of Wellness Dog Food.
dog costume contest
Beginning at 2:00 pm, the crowd went wild when a
unanimous decision by the judges of the Dog Costume Contest deemed a
three year old boy who entered with his pekinese dressed as
“Sewer Boy and Ben the Rat” took home the top prize
of “Best In Show.” Other prizes were awarded (see box at
right) to the top costumes, but everyone that participated was a
winner. The event was hosted by actor and comedian Caroline Rhea who
kept the event moving with witty commentary on the hilarous entrants
and their owners. Celebrity judges included actor Tori Spelling, actor
Lake Bell, actor Cloris Leachman, actor and singer Jaron Lowentein,
radio personality Lisa Fox of LA’s Star 98.7, everyone’s
favorite dog Mr. Winkle, the Commision of Los Angeles Animal Services,
Axel Rubelcava and senior editor of Los Angeles magazine, Margot
Dougherty.
agile dogs, shopping owners and a cat cemetary
With a wide variety of vendors offering wares and
services for dogs and their owners, people shopped while their dogs
sniffed and played and were fawned over by onlookers. On-going
activities included dog adoptions by various animal rescue groups; a
photo booth for photos of attendees with their dressed-up dogs; mobile
microchip clinic; doggy masseuse; expert trainers to answer questions;
vendors displaying the latest in must-have dog paraphernalia; artists
specializing in animal portraits; catering by Miss Irene’s
Catering; and an agility demonstration for show dog enthusiasts.
A doggie favorite of the day was the cat cemetary
dedicated to those pesky cats that have passed on (or at least in
wishful thinking of 90% of all dogs if they have any sense.)
A silent auction with amazing items was also held
with all proceeds benefiting Much Love Animal Rescue and Friends of
Barrington Dog Park. Huge thanks to all of the businesses, corporations
and individuals who donated to the auctions and helped make the day a
financial success for both groups.
